„HEAVENLY BIRDS”

Birdsong, fantasy and the poetry of Baroque music

A tribute to Saint Francis of Assisi

Saint Francis of Assisi found in nature a reflection of God's beauty. To him, birds were not merely part of the landscape, but living beings whose song is a ceaseless praise of the Creator. Their flight became a symbol of joy, trust and inner freedom.

The concert *Heavenly Birds* invites listeners into a world where music and nature intertwine. Baroque composers demonstrated extraordinary imagination in capturing the voices of birds and their flight. Yet this was not merely a virtuoso imitation of nature – for them, birdsong was a reflection of the harmony of the created world.

Biber's *Sonata Representativa* brings to life the songs of the nightingale, the cuckoo, the frog and the cat with extraordinary musical ingenuity. Schmelzer, Walther and Daquin pay homage to the cuckoo, whose characteristic call inspired composers across Europe. Couperin's *Les Barricades Mystérieuses* opens up a space for quiet contemplation, whilst Matteis's compositions bring the elegance, imagination and virtuosity of Baroque art to the fore.

Just as St Francis urged people to learn to listen to the voices of creation, this concert too invites us to listen attentively. Behind the bird motifs lies something deeper – a joy in life, a sense of wonder at the beauty of the world, and a longing for harmony that transcends human words.

May this evening be a moment when music becomes listening, and birdsong a silent prayer of praise
